Report by Rod Hadley:
Rob Davies seals the points with the third goal
After Easter Saturdays defeat away at Leek Town the Pitmen brought in Daniel McLeod from Brereton Social to play in the right back shirt a move which allowed Ross Adams to switch over to the left back position for the Easter Monday clash against Matlock Town.
Anthony Maguire returning to the starting line up had a header deflected out for a corner in the 5th minute from a Ross Dyer cross. Maguire shortly after attempted an overhead kick from a Wayne Dyer cross but fouled the Matlock keeper in the process.
McLeod settled in well and with a long throw in his armour he found Alan Nagington who flicked on the throw in to Ross Dyer who then hit a shot from the edge of the penalty area just over the crossbar.
The Pitmen had claims for a penalty turned down after Alan Nagington tried to flick the ball past a defender. The ball caught the defenders hand which was deemed to be accidental.
Wayne Dyer made a tremendous tackle inside the penalty box to stop Matthew Thorpe in his tracks. Dyer then went onto hit a high pass to Ross Dyer to run onto but he was unable to fully control the bouncing ball which allowed Cameron Fearon to clear the ball out for a corner kick.
Most of the action was in the Matlock half of the pitch, Ross Dyer made an attacking run from his own half, after riding two tackles he played the ball out to Rob Davies who passed the ball forward to Wayne Dyer. After taking the ball to the bye-line Wayne pulled the ball back for Chad Sheppard who went just wide with a shot which he tried to place just inside the left hand post.
Barrowclough for the visitors turned well out wide right to then chip a pass to the near post where Ben Kistell attempted a diving header which went just wide.
Tom Marshall had a half chance to open the scoring when a Chad Sheppard corner found the Pitmen centre half in the centre of the goal but he was unable to get a clear head onto the ball and it glanced wide of the goal.
Paul Evans who had been a spectator for the first half an hour did well to save a powerful shot from an acute angle by Simon Barrowclough. The Matlock forward showed good skills on the left bye-line beating Ben Brown and Rod Davies before shooting.
In the 38th minute following another corner Chad Sheppard crashed a shot from the edge of the penalty area onto the crossbar after Andy Richmond had punched the ball away.
A minute later Ross Adams and Reuben Wiggins-Thomas chased a loose ball inside the Pitmen’s penalty box. The player’s legs got tangled and Wiggins-Thomas went over. The Referee awarded Matlock a penalty kick and showed Adams a yellow card. Barrowclough took the penalty sending Evans the wrong way to put the visitors into an unexpected lead.
After the goal the Pitmen pushed hard for an equaliser, straight from the restart Rob Davies had a shot from the right deflected out of play for a corner.
After Maguire had been fouled by the right hand touchline Chad Sheppard hit the free kick towards the front post where Ross Dyer attempted a header which went wide of the far post.
After the Referee had indicated there would be an extra minute of play Ross Dyer foiled the Matlock defence by switching the ball to Nagington who was then fouled by Fearon. Chad Sheppard took the spot kick which he placed out of Richmond’s reach to level the scores with the last kick of the first half.
The Pitmen were soon in front when in the 50th minute Anthony Maguire scored from close range after Richmond was unable to hold onto a Rob Davies shot from the right.
In the 55th minute the Pitmen had another claim for a penalty turned down; Chad Sheppard over hit a free-kick which Richmond fumbled and in an attempt to retain possession of the ball the Matlock keeper bundled over Nagington.
In the 65th minute the Pitmen extended their lead, Ross Dyer brought the ball down just inside the penalty area, as he was surrounded by defenders Rob Davies nipped in to hit the ball home through the keeper’s legs.
Another run by Ross Dyer nearly created another goal for the Pitmen,he hit a cross in from the left for Wayne Dyer who was unable to control the bouncing ball but still managed a shot which went just over the crossbar.
Mario Pedro replaced Anthony Maguire in the 75th minute then three minutes later Reece Styche came on for Chad Sheppard who had received a knock making a tackle.
Matlock substitute Daniel Williams broke clear in the 77th minute and was denied a goal by Paul Evans blocking his shot from just inside the box. Dan McLeod who had chased Williams back managed to get to the ball first and clear upfield to relieve the danger.
A cross cum shot by Kistell had Evans scrambling back across his goal line but luck was on his side as the ball floated out just wide of the far post.
The final action of the game was Liam McDonald replacing Reece Styche and almost straight away the game ended. The three points gained should ensure the Pitmen will not be involved in a relegation battle and they can now settle down to finishing as high as possible.
