I see that Sutton United have already had to alter their opening home games as the new grass pitch isn't yet ready due to assorted delays!
Costing them a bomb already to rip up the plastic surface.

That article is over two months old but the point remains valid, not least its closing comments about the effect on many local community clubs.

It remains ridiculous that UEFA and FIFA competitions can be played on artificial surfaces but they're not good enough for League Two...

Good news for The Royals
Sorry Keith, I find you weren't included on an email thread about this, extracts here:

From me:

That's nothing new mate.

3G has a max shelf-life of about 10 years, they should have replaced it (ideally with 4G) before now (one of the trailblazers [with whom I have close connections] did so within that time frame).

I was waiting for the bit where they would say they're ripping it up and reverting to grass but no, 3G/4G are far too valuable a source of income to do that!

Oh, and will someone tell them, how to spoll "its" please!

And from a pal who's heavily involved with Walsall Rugby Club:

When the RFU installed our Artificial Grass Pitch the contract was for 30 years and they will replace it at 10, 20, and 30 years. They would have maintained it during that time but actually pay us to do that. They get all of the income from hires and we benefit from the clubhouse footfall and increased exposure.

match off
It happens. They're artificial but not "all-weather."

That said readers with a good memory may recall us playing a game of three thirds in a mid-season friendly against Ellesmere Rangers on an artificial surface near the Welsh border when we hadn't played for weeks because of snow... in that case it had been piled high round the pitch... at the same venue yesterday a match was postponed by three days due to lying snow and sub-zero temperatures...
